From the 1st of January 2020, Barcelona turns all its urban area into a low emissions zone, LEZ, acronym that identify this new status.
The objective of the LEZ is to reduce the environment pollution, to preserve and improve the air quality.
The delimited area is more than 95 km2 and it encompasses all the city of Barcelona between the Ronda de Dalt and the Ronda del Litorral, and a part or the totality of municipalities such as L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, Cornellà de Llobregat, Esplugues de Llobregat and Sant Adrià de Besòs. Inside the city, the neighbourhoods of Vallvidrera, Tibidabo i les Planes, and Zona Franca are exempted of this restriction.
The LEZ will be valid from Monday to Friday, from 7 AM to 8 PM on work days, according to the regulating ordinance.
The vehicles without environmental badge (no label) that won’t be able to drive unless in some exceptions are:
- Gasoline cars previous to Euro 3 registered before the 2000, and Diesel cars previous to Euro 4 registered before January 2006.
- Vans previous to Euro 1 registered before the 1st of October 1994. The carriers have a moratorium of one year to adapt to the new regulation.
- Motorbikes, mopeds and quadricycles previous to Euro 2 registered before 2003.
The rest of the vehicles will be included in 4 different categories according to their polluting potential:
Yellow label.
PV and CV classified in the Registration of Vehicles as gasoline with emissions level Euro 3/III or diesel Euro4/IV or Euro 5/V. Vehicles with more than 8 seats and transport of commodities classified in the Registration of Vehicles as Euro 4/IV or Euro 5/V no matter the kind of fuel they use. Motorbikes and mopeds Euro 2.
Green label.
PV and LCV, classified in the Registration of Vehicles as gasoline with emissions level Euro 4/IV, 5/V or 6/VI or Diesel Euro 6/VI. Vehicles with more than 8 seats and transport of commodities classified in the Registration of Vehicles as Euro 6/VI, no matter the kind of fuel they use. Motorbikes and motopeds Euro 4 and Euro 3.
ECO. Green and blue label.
PV and LCV classified in the Registration of Vehicles as plug-in vehicles with autonomy. Vehicles with more than 8 seats and transport of commodities classified in the Registration of Vehicles as plug-in hybrids with autonomy. Motorbikes and motopeds with electric category HEV and PHEV (non-plugged and plugged hybrid electric vehicles respectively) and less than 40 km of autonomy.
Zero emissions. Blue label.
Vehicles classified in the Registration of Vehicles as Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV), Range Extended Electric Vehicles (REEV), and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) with a minimum autonomy of 40 km or vehicles with fuel cell.
